Walk the streets of Casablanca on a cool Moroccan evening and you can't help but whistle "the tune." Few songs fit the city more perfectly than "As Time Goes By." The old hotels and nightclubs still cut the same skyline as they did in the 1940s and palm trees still tower over the Boulevard de la Corniche. I must have conjured the ghosts of Bogart and Bergman right before I hailed the little red cab, because I slid into the back seat singing, "you must remember this." The driver was quick to make it a duet and introduced himself
as Sami. And as my luck would have it, Sami's taxi was also his portable watch shop. Surprisingly, a few pieces were worth a second look. One watch had seen better days, but wore its scuffs and scratches like badges of honor. It was a classic WWII timepiece that probably took some knocks during the North Africa campaign.
The watch itself was a goner, but the sharp design deserved a second chance. We've recreated it as the Stauer Casablanca Watch, a vintage-styled automatic framed with a coin-edged case. The antique ivory dial features bold bright numerals, blued hands and three eyes to mark military time, day and date. The Casablanca secures with a black leather band and is water-resistant to 5 ATMs. I've still got the original which Sami was glad to sell. I paid him a fair price and tacked on a healthy tip for the ride. He smiled wide, shook my hand and it felt like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. |
