The affair began in a London antique shop. For me it was love at first sight. I'd never seen a face more beautiful. The owner caught me staring at the wall and brought down a magnificent 19th century French Empire cartel clock. A triumph of Rococo and Late Baroque design, its face featured a florid swirl of gilt-bronze, encircled by white porcelain numerals. While the clock was a masterpiece of ornamental art from one of France's most celebrated sculptors and clockmakers, it had not kept time since before World War I. It was also about £12,000 out of my price range. I had to leave it in London, but now you can bring our tribute version home for much less.

The Stauer 1860 Ormolu Watch is a distant relative of that stunning clock, and draws direct inspiration from the exquisite style that reached its peak during the reign of Louis XV. "Ormolu" is the term for an old method of applying ground, high-karat gold to another metal. Today it's considered one of the most important decorative techniques of the neo-classical era. You can easily find lavish golden objects that continue to fetch top dollar at auction, many of which were handcrafted by an elite class of French artisans famous for their "Midas touch."

The Stauer 1860 Ormolu Watch is like ordering Rococo to go. Inside a gold-toned, coin-edged case is the dial, inspired by the extravagance that defined King Louis XV's rule. A full complement of Roman numerals recalls the porcelain index of the original and the ornate, engraved metal face is layered in a luxurious golden glow. Inside, a precise quartz movement keeps impeccable time. The watch secures with a genuine brown leather strap and is water-resistant to 3 ATMs. And as is befitting of a royal treasure, the crown is capped with brilliant blue jewel.

Wear the 1860 Ormolu Watch and you'll get the sense of strolling through the halls of a vast Parisian estate. Put it on and imagine walking past the ladies in the parlor, the swans in the garden and into an era of elegant excess.
