Thoroughbred timekeeping

Vintage chronograph style — vintage Stauer price!

June 6th, 1919. Fans at Belmont expected a horse race. They didn’t know they were about to witness history. But that’s exactly what happened when the 2-year-old Man O’ War powered to the front of the pack, claiming victory by six lengths as the crowds pounded the rail and went absolutely wild.

Over the next two years, Man O’ War became a champion, a legend and arguably, the greatest American thoroughbred racehorse that ever lived. Along with Ruth and Dempsey, he became a superstar athlete of the Roaring Twenties. Thanks to impeccable breeding, he had power and speed and make every second count.

In terms of timepieces, the Stauer Saratoga was bred from the best. Its ancestors include the first chronographs which were invented in the 1820s specifically to help time horse races for King Louis XVIII. In the 1910’s, new chronograph wristwatches became the choice of every race fan. From those first days of clocking horses, to timing auto races and coordinating air combat, a watch that can measure elapsed time became essential equipment.

The vintage-inspired Saratoga has all the marks of a thoroughbred. Details of its dial came from the classic 1920s watches that you would have seen on the wrists of fedora-wearing, cigar- chomping racetrack royalty. The gold-finished case houses a precision movement that oscillates at an unbelievable 32,768 times per second. Set within its dial are a date window, 60-second subdial and 24-hour counter. This is just the kind of watch you’ll find people jockeying for at auction. But while they’re busy betting way too much on a longshot, we’ve got your sure thing.
