In 1904, a Brazilian pioneer aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his French watchmaker friend of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying. The Frenchman immediately designed a watch with a distinctive rounded cornered square bezel and secured it to a strap. He named the watch after his friend. This was the watchmaker’s first wristwatch. His company grew to become synonymous with beautiful timepieces of exemplary workmanship and taste. The Aviador is a tribute to the timepiece that freed the adventurous gentleman to be more
We’ve honored the unique aesthetic that lies behind the famous French watchmaker’s success and added a few variations of our own. Like the original, it sports a square case that is slightly curved on all sides which makes it fit effortlessly on the wrist. We’ve kept the same slanted hour markers but made the numbers an interesting mix of Roman and Arabic. To help with adventuring, we’ve added three subdials for date, day of the week and military time.
Aesthetically, the Aviador is an outstanding salute to the original. Precision-wise, it may be even better. Powered by your own motion, this automatic watch keeps impeccable time with 18 jewels. An exhibition back reveals the workings of this classically-inspired timepiece.
Now, should you venture to one of the many stores started by the French watchmaker for a similar timepiece, be prepared to pay around $25,000. Pricing this timepiece within reason is our tip of the hat to the gentleman who appreciates the fine things in life, and knows the art of a fine deal.
